Noura Mint Seymali is a Mauritanian singer, composer and ardine player from a Moorish griot family. Her music grows from hereditary traditions of poetry, praise singing and modal performance, while incorporating electric guitar, bass, drums and the expansive energy of psychedelic desert rock. The ardine, a traditional harp played by women in Mauritania, remains central to her sound and connects contemporary arrangements with a long musical lineage.
Seymali’s voice moves between intricate melodic lines, call-and-response passages and powerful rhythmic declarations. Her ensemble creates space for improvisation, allowing traditional modes to interact with amplified instruments without treating either element as decorative. The album Yenbett, released in November 2025, and a European tour during 2026 confirm an active international career. Live performance is especially important because the music develops through communication among the musicians and with the audience. Seymali’s work demonstrates how a tradition can remain specific to its cultural history while continuing to change through collaboration, recording and global touring.
