Mary Sibande is a Johannesburg-based South African sculptor, photographer and installation artist whose work examines Black female identity, labour, resistance and historical memory. Her best-known projects centre on Sophie, a recurring figure cast from the artist’s own body. Initially dressed in forms associated with domestic service, Sophie gradually enters imagined roles of power, movement and transformation, allowing Sibande to reconsider inherited social positions through fantasy.
The figure appears in sculpture, staged photography and immersive installation, often surrounded by elaborate clothing and environments that change the emotional and political meaning of the scene. Through these shifts, Sibande addresses the legacies of apartheid, the history of domestic labour and the possibilities available to later generations of South African women. Her 2026 exhibition activity includes Art Paris and the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, continuing an international practice developed across museums, galleries and public collections. Although the work deals with structural inequality, it also gives imagination an active role. Sophie does not merely represent oppression; she becomes a vehicle for agency, aspiration and the invention of alternative futures.
