Jenna Sutela is a Finnish artist based in Berlin whose work brings together biological processes, computational systems, sound and sculptural form. She develops installations, moving images and experimental audio that treat language and intelligence as phenomena extending beyond the human mind. Microbes, algorithms, weather data and synthetic materials become collaborators rather than passive subjects. Her projects often translate signals that are difficult to perceive into voices, images or physical movement, while retaining uncertainty and chance. This approach questions sharp divisions between organism and machine, body and environment, or natural and artificial systems.
Sutela has presented work at institutions including Kiasma, Serpentine Galleries, Haus der Kunst, Moderna Museet and the New Museum. In 2026 she represents Finland at the 61st Venice Biennale with Aeolian Suite, curated by Stefanie Hessler and commissioned by Frame Contemporary Art Finland. The installation transforms the Finnish Pavilion into a wind-driven theatre of five kinetic sound sculptures. Weather measurements, recordings from Venice and Helsinki, wind machines and a woodwind ensemble shape a sixteen-minute score, while the sculptures embody different Venetian winds. On view from 9 May to 22 November 2026, the work connects atmospheric unpredictability with the cultural and environmental consequences of technologies designed to measure and forecast the world.
