Anna Thorvaldsdottir

Anna Thorvaldsdottir is an Icelandic composer whose orchestral and chamber music develops through interlocking layers of timbre, gesture and resonance. She has described her materials as an ecosystem of sounds, in which details emerge, recede and change in relation to a larger form. Her orchestral work Metacosmos, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and premiered in 2018, takes the speculative image of falling into a black hole as a starting point for exploring balance between beauty and chaos. The composer stresses that these relationships are musical rather than a literal depiction of the image.

Thorvaldsdottir works across scales, from string quartets such as Enigma and Rituals to orchestral scores including Archora and the cello concerto Before we fall. Ubique, released in 2025, brings together Claire Chase, Cory Smythe, Katinka Kleijn and Seth Parker Woods. The Helsinki Philharmonic named her its composer-in-residence for the 2025–2026 season, programming several of her works alongside its wider repertoire.

On 23 and 24 September 2026, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is scheduled to perform Metacosmos under Tabita Berglund. Thorvaldsdottir is also the focus of a 2026–2027 residency at Bozar in Brussels, where orchestral and chamber concerts place her writing in different acoustic settings. Her own performance calendar documents further autumn appearances across Europe and beyond, offering several ways to hear how dense textures and quiet transitions develop over time.
