Ia Genberg

Ia Genberg is a Swedish novelist and journalist whose concise, psychologically alert fiction explores memory, friendship, money and the ways identity is shaped through other people. She began her literary career with Sweet Friday in 2012, followed by Belated Farewell and the interconnected stories of Small Comfort. Her 2022 novel The Details won Sweden’s August Prize and was shortlisted for the 2024 International Booker Prize. Across these books, sharp dialogue, shifting forms and precise everyday observations create portraits that remain intimate while opening onto wider questions of value, dependence and social life.

Genberg’s work reached a broad international readership through Kira Josefsson’s English translations. The Details has been sold into dozens of territories, while Small Comfort brings together five linked stories about money, debt and the moral weight of what people owe one another. Its movement between interview, research notes, wedding speech and narrative fiction reflects Genberg’s interest in voice and in structures that can hold several perspectives at once.

In February 2026, Small Comfort was longlisted for the International Booker Prize, making Genberg the first Swedish author to be longlisted twice. In a Booker interview published on 16 March 2026, she discussed the book’s origins and described translators as bridges between languages, cultures and worlds. The recognition extends a body of work distinguished by dry humour, formal agility and close attention to how private lives register larger social forces.
