Brilant Milazimi is a Kosovar painter born in Gjilan in 1994 and based in Prishtina. Trained in visual arts at the University of Prishtina, he builds figurative scenes that move between lived experience, unconscious imagery and fictional worlds. His paintings often place elongated or vulnerable bodies in charged landscapes, balancing menace with tenderness and dark humour. Through recurring motifs such as teeth, lines and suspended movement, he examines trauma, survival, social pressure and the unstable relationship between individual memory and collective history. His recent exhibition record includes presentations in Prishtina, Rome, Los Angeles, New York and Shanghai, alongside group exhibitions at Manifesta 14, the Ludwig Museum and the 2025 Autostrada Biennale.
In 2026, Milazimi represents the Republic of Kosovo at the 61st Venice Biennale with Hard Teeth (Dhëmbë të Fortë), on view at the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Pianto from 9 May to 22 November. The installation centres on a 17-metre landscape painting showing a tightly packed procession of frail figures across mountains recalling rural Kosovo. Smaller paintings and a sound work extend the scene through the church. Rather than depicting arrival, the project focuses on waiting as a physical and political condition shaped by borders, documents, displacement and contested recognition. The figures remain upright with clenched teeth, turning endurance into both image and bodily gesture. Milazimi’s combination of monumental painting, architecture and sound connects personal perception with Kosovo’s recent history while leaving the meaning open to viewers.
