Euchar Gravina

Euchar Gravina is a Maltese composer and artistic director based in London. Born in 1994, he studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Simon Bainbridge and Edmund Finnis after earlier studies in Malta. His catalogue extends from solo and chamber music to choral, orchestral, theatrical and electronic work. Commissions and performances have involved the London Symphony Orchestra, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Aldeburgh Festival, Teatru Malta, Teatru Manoel, Christ Church Cathedral Choir and GBSR Duo.

Gravina’s music often begins with listening to found material, remembered places and particular performances. Archival recordings, instrumental colour and the social histories carried by sound become structures for new work rather than quotations alone. This interest is matched by a curatorial practice: since 2019 he has directed the arts programme at St John’s Waterloo, and he also leads The Bridge at Waterloo and Waterloo Festival, building projects that connect contemporary music, heritage and community.

In 2026 the London Symphony Orchestra selected Gravina for its Jerwood Composer+ programme, through which he curated two concerts and wrote new music. The October showcase Once upon a place concluded with misraħ, a chamber work shaped by sonic and musical artefacts gathered in Malta. Earlier that year, Navona Records released aria, written with violinist Stefan Calleja and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra. These projects place composition, curation and Maltese cultural memory at the centre of his current practice.
