Albanian artist Genti Korini works across painting, moving image, photography, sculpture and installation. Born in Tirana in 1979 and based there, he studied art and design in Cluj-Napoca before completing an MFA at the University of Arts in Tirana. His practice considers how history and ideology are produced through images, language and staged narratives. Earlier projects used the modernist architecture of Albania and the visual legacy of post-communist societies to connect formal abstraction with social commentary. More recent work combines archival research, performance and speculative fiction, creating situations in which fact, projection and cultural identity remain deliberately unstable.
In 2026, Korini represents Albania at the 61st Venice Biennale with A Place in the Sun, on view from 9 May to 22 November. The three-channel video installation brings together live acting, puppetry, 3D animation and an original sound score. It takes as a point of departure the 1916 “Albanian Issue” of the Russian Futurist magazine Bloodless Murder, which treated the country through exoticising nationalist fantasy. Korini reworks this material through Zaum, an experimental language without conventional grammar, to examine how places are narrated from inside and outside their borders. The project extends his interest in Albania’s relationship to modernity while asking how collective memory is shaped by repeated, translated and fictionalised images.
