Karolina Wojtas is a Polish photographer and visual artist who expands photographs into immersive installations, objects, textiles and performances. Born in 1996, she draws on childhood memories, family dynamics, education and everyday absurdities. Saturated colour, awkward staging and deliberately unruly display structures turn galleries into spaces that feel part playground, part classroom and part domestic archive. Images may be printed on fabric, combined with soft sculpture or placed inside interactive environments, encouraging visitors to move through rather than simply look at the work. Humour and apparent spontaneity often mask darker reflections on discipline, adolescence, intimacy and loss.
Wojtas studied at the Łódź Film School and the Institute of Creative Photography in Opava. She received the ING Unseen Talent Award in 2019 and later the C/O Berlin Talent Award for New Documentary Strategies. In 2026, Light Work in Syracuse presented Made in Poland, her first solo exhibition in the United States, from 22 January to 6 March. The installation reversed the Polish legend of a prosperous relative in America by imagining a “rich aunt” sending cultural objects and personal images from Poland. From 13 to 30 June 2026, Fotofestiwal in Łódź also presented FUNreal, continuing her practice of treating art as an open-ended game in which viewers become active participants.
