Rachel Kneebone is a UK-based sculptor born in Oxfordshire and working in London. She models porcelain into densely layered, sometimes suspended structures. Limbs, folds, floral details and fragmented architectural motifs seem to grow into one another; a clear glaze catches the light, while cracks and gaps register the material’s vulnerability. Rather than presenting a stable figure, these forms give bodily experience and change an unsettled physical shape.
Kneebone began working in porcelain in the early 2000s. Her large-scale works The Descent (2009) and 399 Days (2012–13) extend this approach through composite structures whose details reward close looking. She also makes drawings alongside her sculptures, using both media to investigate movement, emergence and the boundaries of the human body. References to classical sculpture and painting recur in her practice, but the resulting forms remain open to several readings.
Her display Metamorphoses: Porcelain Sculpture by Rachel Kneebone is scheduled at the Wallace Collection in London from 23 September 2026 to 25 April 2027. Nine works will be placed in the museum’s historic galleries, including Bower and Temple (both 2026), created for the presentation. The installation puts contemporary porcelain beside objects that have informed her work, inviting visitors to consider connections between their materials, histories and shifting forms.
