Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva is known for combining vocal precision with a strong dramatic presence across opera, recital and concert repertoire. Born in Plovdiv, she studied piano and singing in Bulgaria before completing a master’s degree at the Geneva Conservatory. Her repertoire spans early and Baroque music alongside works by Bellini, Cherubini, Giordano, Mascagni, Puccini, Tchaikovsky and Verdi. She has appeared at institutions including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Teatro alla Scala, Paris Opera, Vienna State Opera and Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Alongside performance, Yoncheva develops independent cultural projects through SY11, the production company she founded in 2020.
Her 2026 programme reflects both this range and her role as a producer. In August she presented open-air events in Sofia, appearing as Tosca and in concert with violinist David Garrett. On 30 August she joins Piotr Beczała and the Swiss Orchestra for a benefit concert at Tonhalle Zürich. From 26 September, she makes her title-role debut in Spontini’s La Vestale at Staatsoper Unter den Linden, with further performances through 9 October. The season continues with Medea at the Metropolitan Opera and Manon Lescaut in Zürich, extending a practice shaped by rare repertoire, major dramatic roles and self-produced projects.
