Amplify marked the 20th anniversary of Boarding for Breast Cancer with an exhibition and fundraising event in the Los Angeles Arts District.
The 2016 event brought together artists, photographers and athletes from snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing.
Art, photography and action sports
The exhibition included work by artists such as Man One, RISK, Marcel “Sel” Blanco, Ernesto Yerena, Caia Koopman and Shepard Fairey.
It also presented action-sports photography curated in connection with photographer Trevor Graves, linking the organisation’s visual identity with the communities from which it had developed.
A live skateboarding session added a performative element, with riders using a quarterpipe and a sculptural boombox ramp created by recycled-skateboard artist Maple XO.
A cultural event built around advocacy
Boarding for Breast Cancer used the anniversary to connect its health-education work with the art and sports communities that had supported it over two decades.
The event raised funds for education, awareness and support for young breast-cancer survivors.
Amplify was therefore structured as more than a conventional benefit exhibition. It combined visual art, photography, sport and activism in a setting that reflected the organisation’s roots in youth and action-sports culture.
