The 2023 exhibition CHAMELEON brought Alloyius Mcilwaine together with more than 30 contemporary artists at The Story Factory in Philadelphia.
The project centred on collaboration across painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing and mosaic glass.
A visual language built from kudoglyphs
Mcilwaine’s work combines street art, Pop art and comic-book illustration through strong colour and geometric form.
He refers to many of his recurring symbols as kudoglyphs, a visual vocabulary carrying affirmations and ideas of positivity.
The exhibition extended that language by placing it in direct exchange with artists working in different media, cultural contexts and generations.
Rather than asking collaborators to imitate one style, the project was designed around the friction and adaptation produced when separate practices met.
Collaboration as the exhibition’s subject
Mcilwaine had wanted to organise a collaborative show for years and used his network of artists to create new works rather than assemble an ordinary group exhibition.
The title CHAMELEON suggested adaptation without complete loss of identity.
The Story Factory, a large creative venue covered in mural art, provided recording, photography and performance spaces alongside the exhibition.
Removed from its promotional language, the project’s main artistic interest was the difficulty of joining many different visual systems into one display.
Collaboration can easily reduce individual work to a shared decorative style. CHAMELEON instead presented Mcilwaine’s graphic vocabulary as a point of contact through which other artists could preserve their own materials and methods.
The exhibition celebrated unity, but its real value came from making difference visible inside the collaborative process.
