A 2023 online solo exhibition presented 20 photographs by New York artist Jeffrey Friedkin, moving between crowded streets, architecture, waterfronts and quieter landscapes.
Selected through the Light Space & Time gallery’s Solo Art Series, the exhibition reflected Friedkin’s interest in the energy and isolation found within city life.
New York as movement, structure and reflection
Works including City Skyline Times Two, Looking Up Fifth, Downtown, Bryant Park Cityscape and Midtown Hustle approached New York through buildings, pedestrian movement and compressed urban space.
Other titles, such as Crossroads of the World, Urban Nocturnal and Heading Home, suggested the psychological experience of moving through the city at different hours.
Friedkin described his photography as a synthesis of observation and technology. His subject was not only the spectacle of New York but the alternating sensations of vibrancy, distance and solitude within it.
Beyond the dense city centre
The exhibition also included landscapes and waterfront images from the Hudson River Valley region.
Central Park Sunset, On the Waterfront, Sleepy Hollow Waterfront, Down River, Clash of the Seasons and Balancing the Moon shifted attention toward water, seasonal change and open space.
Friedkin was a juried photography member of New York’s Salmagundi Art Club and had exhibited widely in galleries and museums. His work had also entered private and institutional collections.
The online exhibition joined street photography and landscape without treating them as separate practices. Across both settings, Friedkin used framing, reflection and changing light to examine how people experience place.
