Art teacher Keith Beale won Best in Show at the 59th MEA/MAEA Art Exhibition with a watercolour of a street behind Detroit’s Eastern Market.
The 2023 exhibition, co-organised by the Michigan Education Association and the Michigan Art Education Association, presented work by educators from across the state.
Industrial landscapes shaped by childhood memory
Beale grew up in Queens, New York, where his father worked as a truck driver and convenience-store owner.
Trips to warehouses and docks left him with a lasting interest in industrial environments and the sense of mystery created by inaccessible spaces behind large buildings.
He photographed the Eastern Market street while visiting Detroit with his wife’s family. The quiet road, low winter sun and surrounding architecture later became the basis of the winning painting.
Watercolour as controlled uncertainty
Beale studied illustration and began working seriously with watercolour in 2004.
He described the medium as a negotiation with water, timing and personal pace. Pigment can move unpredictably, requiring the artist to know when to continue and when to leave the paper untouched.
The Eastern Market work was his first painting of snow. Areas in sunlight and shadow allowed him to explore how colour persists inside apparently neutral winter surfaces.
Beale taught fifth- and sixth-grade art in Livonia after nearly two decades teaching in Virginia.
The exhibition connected educators’ professional practice with their classroom roles. By presenting teachers as working artists, it showed students and colleagues that technical development and artistic curiosity continue beyond formal education.
