The British School Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi marked the United Arab Emirates’ 50th anniversary with an online exhibition of work by students from primary school through sixth form.
The three-part presentation explored creativity, culture, heritage and values associated with both the UAE and the United Kingdom. Inclusion and acceptance were recurring concerns across the selection.
Art across every stage of school
The exhibition brought together work made by children and young people at different points in their education. This structure allowed viewers to see how observation, technical control and conceptual thinking developed from early classroom practice to specialist secondary study.
The school offered Fine Art, Graphic Design and Photography as separate GCSE and A Level subjects, alongside a wider art curriculum and extracurricular projects. Students worked in dedicated studios and used a flexible gallery space for internal and external exhibitions.
Head of Art Dan Emery described the range of options as part of a commitment to individual artistic ambitions rather than a single prescribed route. Former students had progressed to art courses in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Connecting school practice with the wider community
The art department maintained partnerships with cultural and community organisations including the British Council, the British Embassy, Warehouse421 and the Future Centre. Student design work had also contributed to projects connected with the Special Olympics and other public initiatives.
Presenting the anniversary exhibition online made the work accessible beyond the school and placed young artists within the UAE’s wider national commemoration.
The project’s editorial value lay less in institutional awards than in the breadth of student participation. By combining several age groups and disciplines, the exhibition showed how sustained arts education can create continuity from early experimentation to advanced personal practice.
