The 2022 Maine Veterans’ Art Exhibition presented 36 works by 20 veteran artists across the State Capitol complex in Augusta.
The project accompanied Veterans in the Arts and Humanities Day, established by the Maine Legislature in 2015.
Artworks distributed across civic buildings
Works were installed in the Burton M. Cross Building and the Maine Arts Commission, creating a self-guided route through spaces normally associated with state administration.
Examples included Denis Boudreau’s Syria and Cassie Sano’s Morning Light Inside Old Fort Western.
The exhibition allowed different subjects and media to coexist without requiring artists to represent military service directly.
Recognition and exchange among veteran artists
A ceremony in the State House Hall of Flags included the unveiling of an Honorable Service plaque and the presentation of a Quilt of Valor to each participating artist.
A walking tour after the event gave the veterans an opportunity to discuss their work, share stories and build connections with other artists.
The Maine Arts Commission organised the exhibition with the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services, The Peace Gallery and Quilts of Valor.
Using the Capitol complex carried symbolic weight. The state did not recognise veterans only through formal service records or commemorative speeches, but also through their continuing creative lives.
The exhibition remained open through the end of December 2022. Its extended duration gave public employees and visitors repeated access to work that might otherwise have appeared only during a single Veterans Day event.
