The 2022 Brisbane presentation of The Art of Zhen Shan Ren brought more than 30 works by Falun Dafa practitioners to Inala Art Gallery.
The international touring exhibition combined idealised images of the spiritual discipline with scenes referring to the detention and mistreatment of practitioners in China.
Spiritual principles beside images of repression
The exhibition’s title refers to truthfulness, compassion and forbearance, the principles associated with Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong.
Some works depicted meditation, family life and spiritual practice. Others addressed imprisonment, violence and the separation of children from parents.
Visitors and public officials described the images as moving because they placed serenity and suffering within the same exhibition.
A touring exhibition making a political claim
Queensland politicians and community representatives used the opening to condemn the Chinese government’s treatment of Falun Dafa practitioners.
Speakers also connected the exhibition with wider allegations concerning forced organ harvesting from detained people in China. A European Parliament resolution adopted earlier in 2022 was cited during the event.
The source material for the exhibition was closely connected with Falun Dafa organisations and presented their account of the persecution. The works therefore functioned not only as spiritual art but as advocacy intended to build public support.
Inala Art Gallery chair Lin Nguyen emphasised that the stories could be understood through images without extensive written explanation.
The Art of Zhen Shan Ren demonstrated how a touring exhibition can combine religious testimony, human-rights campaigning and representational painting. Its artistic and political purposes were inseparable, and the Brisbane presentation asked audiences to encounter both at once.
